Alte und Neue Ad-Hoc Mesh Protokolle (wcw2022)

Damit Datenpakete ihren Weg durch das Netz finden, werden Algorithmen in Form von Routingprotokollen eingesetzt. Bei Freifunk wurde ursprünglich OLSR eingesetzt. Dann wurde Batman-adv sehr populär und jetzt wird auch mit Babel experimentiert. Aber natürlich gibt es noch viel mehr (BMX, CJDNS, ...) und auch neues (Yggdrasil, Reticulum, ..).In dem Vortrag sollen einmal alle diese Protokolle kurz vorgestellt werden. The current social media situation is catastrophic. A single megacorporation controls the entire digital life of large parts of the world's population. Together with the rapidly improving methods for processing this data, a power that not only concerns experts is being bundled here. And Facebook's monopoly secures itself. On the one hand, users cannot leave Facebook(/ Instagram/WhatsApp) without being cut off from the social life of their friends. On the other hand, alternatives fail because they can't reach a critical mass. It seems impossible that a single application will ever replace Facebook. The freedom of the Internet is fundamentally threatened. Breaking the power of Facebook is probably one of the greatest challenges of our time. And in order to solve this task, we did come up with a detailed concept that we want to present to the public for the first time at 36c3. SNAC - Social Network Application Cluster - is the name of the protocol used to standardise data exchange between different social media applications. Just as email protocols enable users to choose their provider freely, this protocol should also enable greater diversity in this area. It is easy to see that a single application isn't able to satisfy the needs of every single user. With SNAC we enable a decentralized structure, where each user can choose his server, but also his client application, from a broad spectrum. By developing our pilot application Open Source, we make it easy for other developers to integrate their own applications into the network. But the decentralized Open Source dream alone is not enough to revolutionize the social media world. In order for the new applications emerging in SNAC to be able to run, an appropriate economic environment is needed to cover the operating costs. If the user accesses many different servers while surfing through the decentralized network, the question arises who is responsible for the access costs caused. There is a lack of a corresponding micropayment service with which it is possible to pay very small amounts easy and securely. At first glance, this seems like a project of its own, but it is closely linked to the operation of a decentralised social network. And there are several advantages emerging by linking social networks with a micropayment system. For example, users can donate a few cents to the creators of content they value, which then adds up to a fair reward for the creators. And this is done directly, independently and without forced ads for the users. But the mental alarm bell of data security rightly rings here when one tries to link financial and private communication data. Therefore, it is all the more important to hand over data sovereignty to the user when planning the protocols and to leave the server operators only the task for which they are fairly paid - the operation of the servers. We are currently putting this concept into protocols that enable secure transactions and protect the user's data. The aim is to create an environment where everyone has the chance to honestly and transparently pay the costs they incur instead of filling the pockets of corporations with their data. Our project is quite daring, that is clear to us. And yet we are sure that this is exactly what we want to do in the coming years. Because there is a chance that we will find 15 crazy people who want to develop this utopia together with us. There's a chance we'll find 50,000 people supporting us with an average of 1€ a month to feed our 15 crazy developers. There's a chance that we can create an environment where many small subnets with cool innovative applications can trigger a movement that's going to be so big it will overcome Facebook's monopoly. And above all, we can create an environment where technology benefits people again, rather than the other way around. If 36c3 isn't the right place for a project like this, what else is? We will give a talk in which we will discuss a better world and the difficulties that lie on the path there. We want to encourage listeners to think and participate, but above all we are also there to initiate a discussion. We want to hear all the concerns and mistakes that we overlook and we need the expertise from all the different angles that only the CCC brings together.

Compared to software, the open source approach is relatively new to most actors in the field of (mechanical) hardware. Plus Open Source Hardware faces some special issues. A yet missing definition of its "source code" is one of them (+ patent law, liability, engineers that do not know how to work with git, costly prototyping…). DIN SPEC 3105 will be/is the first official standard for Open Source Hardware and also the first official standard ever published under a free license (CC-BY-SA 4.0; that was a lot of lobby work ;) ). It defines the technology-specific "source" of Open Source Hardware and aims to build a bridge between research institutes, public authority, industry and the worldwide open source community.

Richtlinien für den ethischen Einsatz von Algorithmen gibt es langsam wirklich genug. Konzerne und Organisationen übertrumpfen sich geradezu damit zu betonen, dass der Mensch bei allen maschinellen Entscheidungen im Mittelpunkt stehen soll, dass die Systeme fair und nachvollziehbar arbeiten müssen. Aber egal, ob sie nun direkt von Google und IBM stammen, von Normungsorganisationen wie IEEE oder der OECD – gemeinsam ist all diesen Richtlinien: Sie sind rechtlich nicht bindend. Die Frage ist also: Wem dienen solche Ansätze der unternehmerischen und staatlichen Selbstregulierung? Und wollen wir uns auf sie verlassen oder brauchen wir klare gesetzliche Auflagen? Welche Regeln sollten für Unternehmen gelten, welche für den Staat? Und wer soll darüber wachen, dass sie eingehalten werden?

Today, users are often required to share personal data, like emailaddresses, to use services on the web. As part of normal service operation,such as notifications or billing, services require access to -- ideallyfresh and correct -- user data. Sharing attributes in the Web today is oftendone via centralized service providers to reduce data redundancy and to giveservices access to current, up-to-date information even if the user iscurrently offline. Abuse of this power is theoretically limited by locallaws and regulations. But, the past has shown that even well-meaningidentity providers struggle to keep user data safe as they become majortargets for hackers and nation state actors while striving for monetizinganonymized statistics from these data. We advocate for a new, decentralizedway for users to manage their identities for the following reasons: The current state of omniscient identity providers is a significantthreat to the users' privacy. Users must completely trust the service provider with respect toprotecting the integrity and confidentiality of their identity in their interest. The service provider itself is facing substantial liability risksgiven the responsibility of securely managing potentially sensitive personaldata of millions of users. We present re:claimID, a decentralized identity service with the followingproperties: Self-sovereign: You manage your identities and attributes locally onyour computer. No need to trust a third party service with your data. Decentralized: You can share your identity attributes securely overa decentralized name system. This allows your friends to access your shareddata without the need of a trusted third party. Communication struggles during Colombian guerrilla (bmv12)

I would like to share a research about the communication struggles of one of the Colombian guerrillas, FARC-EP, with the Colombian army. I documented how radio-based communication became a crucial, but ambiguous infrastructure of war at FARC units. The sudden introduction of localization technologies by the Colombian army in 2000 presented a lethal threat to the guerrilla group. The data I collected during interviews in Colombia reports a severe learning process to diminish this new risk, relying on a combination of informed beliefs and significant technical understanding. A mesh network finds strength in its decentralized nature because there is no single point of failure and we want our organization to embody that, too. However, during this project, we have learned the ways in which our laws and cultural attitudes favor hierarchical organizational models over those that are decentralized. At the university of Trento, we are developing a tool (still without a name) that tells you if there is line-of-sight between two buildings and an estimation of how much bandwidth you can achieve, based on the datasheets from real devices. It uses open data from LIDAR traces to have real building altitudes and tries to suggest what is the best option when you add a new node and you can choose between several potential neighbors. In 2013, qaul.net antennas on the roof of 6b interconnected the neighborhood with an informal settlement on the other side of the canal. qaul.net is undergoing a complete rewrite. Have you heard of Mastodon yet? It's a federated social network (similar to Twitter) that has been slowly but steadily growing over the last two years. While it\'s not mainstream yet (only around 2.5Mill users), the technology underneath it (Activity Pub and JSON-LD) make it a very hopeful candidate for helping us escape the platform zombie apocalypse. In order to ensure long-term stability of such a federated network it may make sense to combine it with another new technology called decentralized identifiers (DID). Using DIDs we may be able to avoid the problems that Moxie mentioned in his well known blogpost on federation ("the ecosystem is moving"). The DID standard is the result of many years of work by rebooting-the-web-of-trust community.

Cryptography gives us the ability to have law without police. For example when I send you an encrypted message, we don't need law enforcement to prevent the letter carrier from looking in it. Blockchains extend that power by giving us the ability to have business interactions without accountants. For example when you have bitcoin in your wallet, you don't need an auditor to check that it's really there. But for something so secure, you may wonder why blockchain has been the domain of so many scams. I claim this is not a flaw in the technology but rather the fault of malfeasants who misrepresented what was actually being promised, and as the technology matures, I think blockchain will become far less corrupt than more traditional forms of business. 7 years ago I set out to create a turn-key solution for anyone who wanted to build a mesh network, and by the numbers I have failed. I created an interesting piece of software which makes secure networks with minimal setup, and there are about 1000 nodes in the public network, but its deployment in actual wireless meshes has been slim to none. People building real world meshes need technology that works perfectly, or has the flexibility to let them go in and manually fix it when it doesn't. Right now we have the latter but the former is still a dream. But the dream of solving mesh network problems once is still not dead. I will present a project which I am now working on to make an open blockchain called Mantle. Mantle fundamentally consists of 3 things: A means to tokenize and trade bandwidth, a bandwidth-hard proof of work to create demand that will drive investment in network infrastructure, and an elected network steward which will receive 20% of newly mined Mantle for the purpose of investing in the network. Open protocols, network neutrality and free speech have taken us so far in so little time. But today it seems more and more that every political group considers something or other to be censorship-worthy. Task-Force Amazon: building communication infrastructures with indigenous groups (bmv12)

This talk is dedicated to present our current approach to indigenous groups, which are mobilized in resisting to the invasion of their territories in the Amazon. Strategically, we decided to begin this project with indigenous groups of west Amazon, Acre, Brazil: the Ashaninka and the Huni Kui people. Our aim is to collaborate to building a communication belt to monitor and communicate between these two territories, which are located on the border of Brazil and Peru. We propose to create an app that would make every device in the network a node in a mesh of data by using cryptographic keys to sign every message. As part of tech development, a combination of solar and water energy will also be studied, implemented and documented to further publication: in many of our target communities there's no electricity Available. Combining different technological solutions, we understand that voice, photo and video can have a better circulation inside indigenous territories using mesh networks, radio stations and, eventually, be uploaded to the Internet to make it internationally visible. We're a group of anthropologists and tech developers with extensive experience in fieldwork and would like to invite more researchers and activists to join us in this front.

Gluon mit BATMAN setzt klassisch auf ein großes Layer 2 Netz, was in den großen Freifunk Communities zu Problemen führt. Mit unseren Bemühungen in "Project Parker" versuchen wir diese Probleme durch den Einsatz von klassischem Routing zu umgehen. In unserem Talk stellen wir unsere Architektur vor und zeigen welchen Stand unsere Umsetzung erreicht hat.

Der größte Schritt aus Benutzersicht war, die langen DECT Registrierungsschlangen gegen eine Selbst- oder Auto-Registrierungsfunktion zu tauschen. Detection of refugee boats on the Mediterranean with a drone by using FOSS (35c3oio)

As NGOs continuing searching the Mediterranean by boat and a few planes, it would be good to find additional effective ways to find people in distress in the sea. To be able to search a huge area in the Mediterranean its good to get more eyes in the sky. For this purpose I want to show you and discuss computer-vision approaches to detect refugee boats which are able to run on basic minicomputers (like the RPI) which are cheap enough to put on a simple drone. All done by using free open source software.
